Mont Saint-Michel

Mont Saint-Michel stands dramatically above the surrounding sandflats, with the abbey towering above a small walled town. It is a huge tourist destination, by far the most popular of any of the sites we visited, and the causeway connecting it to the mainland is effectively a giant car park.

A narrow street winds up to the abbey, with shops catering to the hordes of tourists on either side. There were a lot of eating options, but we didn't choose well, and had unremarkable crepes for lunch.

The abbey itself is big enough that we weren't at all crowded inside it; it is cool and peaceful inside.
