Kauri Loop Track + Hamilton Museum
Friday 25th February
In the morning I did the Kauri Loop Track (in the Hakarimata Scenic
Reserve), which had some lovely old trees and (walking a bit further)
a lookout with views (once the fog lifted) over the Waikato towards
Hamilton. After that I had a quick drive around Hantly where I got a
bit lost — and where there isn't much except the power station.
Back in Hamilton, I had a shower and then walked along the river to the
Waikato Museum. The riverside walk is lovely, and was almost deserted.
There was a cruise paddle steamer, a handful of other pedestrians,
and many ducks and birds (including a woodpecker).
The museum cafe had closed, so I went over the road and found a place
which had excellent coffee and an eggplant pizza, before returning to
the museum. This had some good stuff, but the posters and labels had
an appalling number of spelling and grammar mistakes.
I spent some time in a big secondhand bookshops Crows Nest Books, checked
my email, had a nap, and went into town for ok Chinese and a quick visit
to an Internet cafe to check my email.
